"What Am I Here For" Harry James May 1957

I think that it is truly unfair for Jazz writers to dismiss Harry James’ Capitol album “Wild About Harry.” Volumes could be written of how most of the successful Big Bands of the thirties and forties underwent transitional periods in the life of the band. Most transitions were out of necessity. Woody Herman went from being “The Band That Plays the Blues,” to the first Herd ad infinitum. Count B...

This audio was captured during a two week stand at Caesar's Palace in November/December of 1968. Harry James and His Orchestra provided the accompaniment for Frank Sinatra. During a Sinatra show, there wasn't much opportunity for Harry James to play his trumpet. You will hear Harry noodling a bit at 1:29 of this clip. Sonny Payne is the drummer, Tommy Porrello is the lead trumpet player. A mome...

"Blues in the Night" Buddy Rich sings with Harry James on drums
Просмотров 13728 дней назад
Buddy Rich began his career as a performer at the age of 18 months old. He would become part of his parents' Vaudeville act. Throughout Buddy's performing career, he was a frustrated singer. Perhaps this began when he was on the Tommy Dorsey band with Frank Sinatra. Buddy saw firsthand the fawning and adulation of young Sinatra. In my opinion, Buddy thought more of his singing ability than he s...

This is from a radio broadcast from the Hollywood Palladium on June 9, 1956. This is the full James big band, with Willie Smith. The trumpet section is Nick Buono, Rolf Ericson, and Don Smith playing lead. Buddy Rich gets an extended solo. Harry plays some great upper register!
"Shine" Harry James live broadcast August 5, 1949

This arrangement of "Shine" was released on a Hindsight Records album. However, this is from a later radio broadcast. The Hindsight album credits the arrangement to Jack Mathias. However, it doesn't sound like it to me. It sounds more like the work of Johnny Richards, Neal Hefti or Jimmy Mundy, who were all staff arrangers for James during this period. Bruce McDonald plays some brilliant piano ...

"Serenade in Blue" is a 1942 big band song composed by Harry Warren, with lyrics written by Mack Gordon. It was introduced in the 1942 film Orchestra Wives by Glenn Miller and His Orchestra. Billy May wrote the classic Glenn Miller arrangement, complete with a beautiful obbligato by trumpet soloist Bobby Hackett. Ray Conniff sent an invoice, and a chart, to Harry James on December 27, 1951. Jam...

Jalousie is a tango written by Danish composer Jacob Gade in 1925. Harry James first began to perform Johnny Thompson's arrangement of "Jalousie" in 1942. He didn't get around to recording it until November 1946. The James band also recorded it for Capitol in 1955. From the moment that I excitedly purchased "Sinatra Duets" in 1994, I have had a love/hate relationship with the recordings! I wished then, that I had the recordings from that session, without the annoying celebrity duets added. For those of you who felt like I do, here is Frank Sinatra's actual studio track on "I've Got a Crush On You."

Sonny Payne was a great drummer and showman, I saw several times when he was with Count Basie. The only criticism I have is that in the 60's whenever an artist was doing a solo, the producers always cut to a close up of the artist's face, whereas I wanted to see them play!!!

There are a lot of fine drummers out there who have speed, control and power, but they don't have the musicality that drummers like Buddy had. when you want competition for how fast you can play the kicks petals or straight drum strokes, then you just listen to the machine gun sounding nonsense of today's drummers. But, When you want to listen to a good drum compositions, that includes inflections, mood and inspirational thought provoking joy, then you listen to the ones like buddy! Case closed. End of lecture.
